NGOs are non-profit
organizations that provide services that the government cannot or will not
provide. They have become the 'delivery system' for helping poor farmers
reclaim their eroded land and increase their income. Donors prefer to fund
NGOs rather than ministries of agriculture, because they get to rural
communities on a regular basis, their projects are cheaper, and their grants
can be quickly terminated when their projects prove ineffective.
SID has provided extensive technical assistance to local NGOs in Bolivia, Peru, Guatemala, and Burundi.
